This demonstration day at Headwater Farm is in collaboration with KSU and Dr. Tammy Horn Potter, beginner beekeeper grant coordinator at Kentucky State University and the former state apiarist for Kentucky.
Dr. Potter will be using Seedleaf’s newly-installed hives at Headwater Farm to demonstrate how to do an inspection on a colony (checking the hive for things like worker cell and drone cell count, pollen and honey, keeping an eye out for queen cells, and identifying signs of disease or a weak colony). She will also be demonstrating how to transfer a nuc (a small, starter bee colony) to the hive they will live in permanently.
Attendees will also learn about the schedule and obligations of a beekeeper throughout the different seasons, integrated pest management, and general best practices.
