SEEDS

Welcome to the homepage for the 2011 SEEDS Program.

SEEDS (Service Education and Entrepreneurship in Downtown Spaces) is a youth program that targets 5th – 8th grade students living in areas of Lexington that have been identified as food deserts. In an attempt to connect these youth with healthy fresh food, participants will be involved in all aspects of growing food in an urban setting. Students will gain hands-on experience in growing and caring for a garden, meal preparation, and nutrition basics. Participants will also learn the fundamentals of social entrepreneurship as they work to develop a collaborative business venture that involves selling their healthy products door-to-door in their community. Through weekly interactions with their neighbors, they will open new channels of communication crossing generational and racial divides. Ultimately, the participants will become healthy food ambassadors for their communities.

Copies of the SEEDS 2011 Application can be found here and are due by March 2nd.

They can be emailed to rebecca@seedleaf.org or mailed/delivered to the East 7th Street Center at 240 E. 7th Street, Lexington, KY 40508, from 3 – 5:30pm Mon-Fri.

This program has been made possible by generous funding from the Bluegrass Community Foundation.
