What is a Seedleaf?
Did you know a seedleaf is the first leaf or leaves that emerge from the soil, the first sign that a seed has germinated and intends to grow? Often, as is the case for spinach, these early leaves don’t look much like those of the adult plant. When the true leaves emerge, those that come after the seed leaves, a young plant can be transplanted from a protected environment to the field. We were initially taken with this image of small growth and what it suggests about small efforts occurring under the soil’s surface, work that goes largely unseen. Each growing season we are converted once again to such quiet growth; we are reminded that small efforts accrue to unexpected results.
