Soups On–Spring Veggie!

by Ryan on April 4, 2012

Dear Friends,
Just wanted to let you know that we will be having our first Soup’s On event of the season this Thursday, April 5th. This is always a fun and casual event of folks cooking together and sharing good stories over kettles of soup, and it’s great to know that some hungry people will get to enjoy a bowl of homemade goodness. This week we will be making “Spring Veggie Soup” using some early spring greens, carrots, herbs and whatever else is available. As always, bring a friend and container to take home some soup, and we’ll see you Thursday, April 5th!

Soup’s On is a monthly event, done in partnership with Woodland Christian Church. We gather seasonal ingredients and curious community members to make a special soup with these locally grown, fresh ingredients. Each participant will take part in the preparation and is invited to stay and share a bowl with others at the end. The soup is then divided into small amounts for participants to take home (remember to bring your own container!) with the remainder used to feed the hungry. These events are held on the first Thursday of the month.

When: Thursday, April 5th (and every First Thursday of the month), from 6pm – 8pm
Where: Woodland Christian Church (530 E. High St.)
What to Bring: Please bring a container to transport your soup after the event (assuming you don’t want to stay and eat together). Also, we ask for $8 donation to help cover the cost of the nonseasonal ingredients.
Help spread the word and bring friends! In order to have an accurate count of ingredients to buy, please RSVP to jessica.ballard@bdvp.org by Thursday morning… if you don’t mind.

Thanks to UK Students!

by Andy on April 3, 2012

Thanks to these fine folks from UK, we got a lot accomplished this past Saturday at  the London Ferrill Garden. They helped us with weeding around trees, preparing beds for planting, mulching walking paths, and even with composting. LFG had quite the makeover!  Thanks again for your help because we depend on awesome volunteers to keep are gardens pumping out sweet vegetable goodness.

We continue to lean on our volunteers for seasonal and timely help. The work continues this weekend. We’d love to have your help getting some of our community gardens back into form. Duties will include quite a bit of weeding, some planting/sowing, and other early spring things. Here are the details:

1. Friday, March 30, 10am-noon–Join all-star volunteer Aaron German at the Withrow Community Garden (corner of Withrow and E. Third St).

2. Saturday, March 31, 10am-noon–Jessica Ballard will be directing traffic at the London Ferrill Community Garden (223 E. Third St).

3. Saturday, March 31, 1-3pm–Jessica Ballard will also help orchestrate the work at the North Pole Garden (907 North Limestone). (She will certainly be done in time for interested parties to watch what I am told is an important basketball game.)

Our friends at Confrontation Point Ministries are hosting an Adventure Race Fundraiser. Designed with CP’s signature style of mixing adventure with service, competitors will run, bike, paddle, construct, plant, serve and be challenged. Proceeds and donations will enable Confrontation Point to benefit Kentuckians in need, inspire teams to serve and equip young people to lead.

Every summer Confrontation Point Ministries brings youth groups to help plant, harvest, maintain, and serve in our gardens. Just last year, 10 youth groups from different parts of the United States came into our community and helped us with Seedleaf’s mission of nourishing Lexington through growing and sharing food.

When: Saturday, April 14, 2012 race starts 9 AM.

Where: Wilmore, KY

Website: Adventure Race Site
