City Council is meeting again tomorrow (Tuesday, August 14th, 1pm) to discuss a new city ordinance that would allow residents to keep 1-2 pigs or goats on residential spaces in the city of Lexington. If you would like to support such an initiative, consider attending tomorrow’s meeting at the government center (200 E. Main St). If you are unable to attend, send an email to the following addresses to let our elected officials know that you support this ordinance to allow goats in the city:

I see no difference between a small agricultural animal and a dog or a cat–as pets or for a food resource. People should always have the right to feed their families. The only objection is one of a sense of bygone rivalry of country vs the city. We have grown past that and lots of urbanites want to grow some of their own food. It is an international trend and good for both the rich and the poor. Urban farming is a source of truly local food. In these troubled economic times, we should allow for all kinds or ways for people to survive.
If we can have horses and Great Danes in our city, why not pygmy goats and pigs? I think you should include mini-cows. The dogs in my neighborhood make much more noise. These creatures couldn’t be any worse.
The stipulation should be one of animals per square foot and normal nuisance restrictions, just like for any pet–keeping them restrained, clean and cared for.
I am writing in support of a city ordinance that would allow 1-2 pigs and goats at a residence in the city of Lexington. Thank you for considering this ordinance.
