Friends, yesterday, Seedleaf had a chance to win a truck that would have improved our ability to serve the Lexington community. The overwhelming support you showed by voting for us and asking your friends and family to vote for us was deeply touching, and served as a resounding reminder about why we do what we do. Quite simply, what brings Seedleaf supporters together is the belief that all human beings, just by virtue of being born and existing in the world, deserve the opportunity to eat healthy food. We all practice this belief daily right here in Lexington, KY. Everything else that comes out of this belief—time spent in the garden together getting to know our neighbors, the sharing of recipes handed down in our families, the chance to educate young people about where food comes from and how to raise it, and more—is a pure bonus, or what we, as a nonprofit, consider our purest profit. These experiences and knowledge-sharing are the payment for our work.
Unfortunately, despite the incredible outpouring of support from you and your friends and family, we did not win.
On the bright side, we were a runner-up! This means we will receive a $1,000 grant from Toyota which will go directly into Seedleaf’s ongoing work serving the Lexington community. We are deeply thankful for your support along the way in getting us here.
Looking ahead, we see a bright and prosperous summer. We gained about 220 facebook followers during the competition yesterday (a 42% increase in one day!), which is a huge win in itself! We are so excited that this many new people have found us, and we just can’t wait to host you in our gardens and at our community events like Soup’s On!
Seedleaf will continue nourishing our community by growing, cooking, sharing, and recycling food. We will continue looking for you in our gardens, and on some sunny day when you arrive, we’ll show you around the garden and point out what’s ready to harvest. We’ll show you our compost bins, if you want, and help you get started with your own composting at home. We’ll introduce you to our other friends, and our community’s bonds will strengthen. This is how it works.
There may not be a shiny new truck parked beside the garden when you arrive—but on this day, you will be there, and we will be there, and that will be enough. We hope to see you soon!

Simply awesome work, everyone. It was fun, and I’m glad to hear we may not have annoyed all our fb friends in vain. You are so worth this effort. Let’s do it again!
