We are beyond thrilled to announce that Seedleaf was recently awarded a grant from the Bluegrass Community Foundation and the Foundation for a Healthier Kentucky.
We received this grant to greatly expand and grow a program we began last year on a small scale.
The program, called SEEDS (Social Education and Entrepreneurship in Downtown Spaces), will be offered to 15 students from 5th – 8th grade who reside in the East End area. the grant money will cover programming, supplies, and stipends for each active participant.
In an attempt to connect these youth with healthy fresh food, participants will be involved in all aspects of growing food in an urban setting. Students will gain hands-on experience in growing and caring for a garden, meal preparation, and nutrition basics. Participants will also learn the fundamentals of social entrepreneurship as they work to develop a collaborative business venture that involves selling their healthy products door-to-door in their community. Through weekly interactions with their neighbors, they will open new channels of communication crossing generational and racial divides. Ultimately, the participants will become healthy food ambassadors for their communities.
The program will run from March through November, and we are currently accepting applications, which are available here.
Expect to hear much more about this program throughout the growing season, and please help circulate the announcement to families who may be interested!
